OpenAI Plans to Merge ChatGPT and Codex Into One Desktop Superapp

OpenAI is making its biggest product bet yet. The company plans to merge ChatGPT, its AI coding agent Codex, and its Atlas web browser into a single desktop application, according to a report by Alex Heath at Sources. With 900 million weekly active users, this move signals a dramatic shift from standalone chatbot to all-in-one artificial intelligence platform.

Codex Becomes the Foundation for Everything

Codex was originally built as a tool for software developers. A coding agent is a type of AI system that can write, test, and debug code on its own with minimal human guidance. But OpenAI now believes this same agent technology can handle tasks far beyond programming, from research and analysis to project management.

"We're really thinking about how we get this to ChatGPT in such a way that you're not thinking about modes. No modes for us. That is the goal," said Alexander Embiricos, Codex product lead. The vision is a seamless experience where hundreds of millions of users gain access to powerful agent capabilities without switching between separate apps.

To sharpen its focus, OpenAI has already discontinued side projects like Sora, its video generation tool. Leadership expects the superapp to roll out in stages over roughly six months, beginning with expanded Codex features that extend into general productivity tasks.

The superapp strategy puts OpenAI in direct competition with a much wider range of software companies. By combining a conversational assistant, a coding agent, and a web browser into one platform, the company is positioning itself to replace multiple tools that professionals rely on every day.
