OpenAI Plans to Merge ChatGPT, Codex, and Atlas Into One Superapp

OpenAI is building a desktop superapp that will combine ChatGPT, Codex, and its Atlas web browser into a single unified application. The move signals a major shift in how the company delivers its artificial intelligence tools to users and businesses.

Why OpenAI Is Merging Its AI Products

According to an internal memo from Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications, the company realized it was spreading its efforts across too many separate apps. Simo wrote that product fragmentation had become a central problem the team could not resolve while maintaining separate tools. The superapp aims to fix this by letting users chat, write code, and browse the web all within one interface.

The consolidation also reflects a broader industry trend toward agentic AI, where AI systems can complete multi-step tasks autonomously. By combining chat, coding, and web browsing, OpenAI wants to create a platform where an AI agent can coordinate across all three functions to handle complex workflows on a user's behalf. For example, a user could ask the app to research a topic online, summarize the findings, and then generate working code based on the results, all without switching between tools.

What the Superapp Will Look Like

The unified app is being developed for Mac and Windows first, with the mobile ChatGPT app staying separate during the initial rollout. OpenAI President Greg Brockman is working alongside Simo to oversee the project. The company plans to release the superapp in stages over the coming months, with the first major preview expected before the end of 2026.

Codex, OpenAI's AI-powered coding assistant that helps developers write and debug software, will be deeply integrated into the new platform. Atlas, a lesser-known AI browser the company has been testing internally, will handle web-based tasks. ChatGPT remains the conversational backbone, tying everything together through natural language prompts.

The superapp announcement comes shortly after OpenAI closed a record 122 billion dollar funding round at an 852 billion dollar valuation. With fresh capital and a unified product vision, the company appears to be positioning itself not just as a chatbot maker but as a full AI operating layer for the desktop.
