Cloudflare Takes on WordPress With New Open-Source CMS Built by AI

Cloudflare has entered the content management space with EmDash, an open-source serverless CMS it calls the spiritual successor to WordPress. What makes the launch remarkable is not just the product itself but how it was built: artificial intelligence coding agents wrote the bulk of the code in roughly two months.

A Modern Answer to a Twenty-Four-Year-Old Platform

WordPress currently powers over forty percent of all websites on the internet, but its age is showing. According to Cloudflare, ninety-six percent of security issues on WordPress sites come from plugins, which run with full access to the core system. EmDash takes a fundamentally different approach by isolating each plugin inside a sandboxed worker environment with a strict permissions manifest, similar to how mobile apps request access to specific device features. The CMS is built entirely in TypeScript on the Astro framework and runs serverlessly on Cloudflare Workers, meaning site owners only pay for actual computing time rather than keeping servers running around the clock. It stores content in Portable Text, a structured format that separates what you write from how it looks, making it easier for both humans and machines to work with. EmDash is released under the permissive MIT license and is available as a free download on GitHub.

AI Built This CMS and Now Lives Inside It

The most striking detail is how EmDash came to exist. Cloudflare says it recently rebuilt the popular Next.js framework in a single week using AI agents before turning those same agents loose on EmDash for two months. The result is a CMS that is not only built by AI but built for AI-powered workflows. EmDash ships with a command-line interface that lets AI agents manage content, migrate WordPress sites, and modify configurations without human intervention. It also includes a built-in Model Context Protocol server, known as an MCP server, which allows large language models like Claude and ChatGPT to interact directly with a website’s content and settings.

The launch is still early. EmDash is at version 0.1.0 and Cloudflare describes it as preview software. Whether it can truly challenge a platform used by nearly half the web remains to be seen, but the combination of modern security architecture, serverless economics, and native AI tooling suggests Cloudflare is playing a long game in a market that has been waiting for disruption.
