OpenAI Co-Founder Karpathy Joins Anthropic to Supercharge Claude

Andrej Karpathy, one of the most recognized names in artificial intelligence, has joined Anthropic to work on the pre-training team behind Claude. The move marks a significant talent win for the company as it competes with OpenAI and Google in the intensifying race to build the most capable AI systems available today.

What Karpathy Will Do at Anthropic

Karpathy started this week at Anthropic, where he will work under pre-training lead Nick Joseph. Pre-training is the large-scale process that gives a large language model, or LLM, its core knowledge and reasoning abilities before it gets fine-tuned for specific tasks. Fine-tuning is the follow-up step where the model learns to follow instructions and behave safely. Karpathy will also launch a new team focused on using Claude itself to speed up pre-training research, an approach that could let AI tools help build better AI.

An Anthropic spokesperson confirmed that the new team will explore how Claude can accelerate the research pipeline. This fits a growing trend across the industry where leading companies use their own AI models to automate and improve key parts of the development cycle, reducing the time between breakthroughs.

Why This Hire Matters

Karpathy co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and later served as director of AI at Tesla, where he led the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving computer vision teams. After leaving Tesla in 2022, he returned briefly to OpenAI before starting Eureka Labs, an education startup focused on using AI assistants to teach complex topics. He is also widely known for coining the popular term vibe coding and for his YouTube tutorials that have helped thousands of beginners learn about deep learning and neural networks.

His decision to join Anthropic rather than return to OpenAI sends a strong signal about where top researchers see the most promising work happening right now. The hire comes as Anthropic continues to expand rapidly, backed by billions in funding from investors including Google, Salesforce, and several major venture capital firms.

Karpathy said he is very excited to get back to hands-on research and development at the frontier of large language models. He added that he remains deeply passionate about AI education and fully plans to return to that work in time.
