Midjourney Moves Beyond AI Art With Full-Body Ultrasound Scanner

Midjourney, the company best known for its artificial intelligence image generator, has taken a dramatic turn into healthcare hardware. The company unveiled Midjourney Medical, a new division built around a full-body ultrasound scanner that can image the human body in roughly 60 seconds with no radiation exposure.

How the Scanner Works

The device, which Midjourney calls Ultrasonic CT, uses approximately 500,000 tiny transducers, each about the size of a grain of sand. These elements work like a dolphin’s echolocation, acting as both speakers and microphones inside a water-filled tank. When a person steps in, the system fires ultrasound waves that bounce off tissue and return data used to build a detailed three-dimensional image of the entire body. Unlike traditional MRI machines, the scanner requires no powerful magnets and produces zero radiation, relying entirely on sound and water.

Midjourney developed the technology in partnership with Butterfly Network, a company that specializes in portable ultrasound hardware. The current version focuses on body composition maps, which do not require approval from the Food and Drug Administration. A third-generation scanner with fully custom silicon is planned for 2028 and is expected to deliver significantly better image quality and faster scan times.

Ambitious Deployment and Spa Plans

CEO David Holz has set bold targets for the new division. Midjourney aims to deploy more than 50,000 scanners worldwide by 2031, with a total scanning capacity of one billion scans per month. Holz claims that widespread early imaging could help avoid 30 percent of all deaths and cut 50 percent of all healthcare costs. The company also plans to open its first Midjourney Spa in the heart of San Francisco by late 2027, offering full-body scans alongside hot tubs, saunas, and cold plunges in a wellness-focused setting.

The pivot is still in its earliest stages. Only about a dozen people have been scanned so far, and the leap from AI-powered creative tools to medical imaging hardware is a significant one. Whether Midjourney can deliver on its ambitious promises remains to be seen, but the announcement signals just how far AI companies are willing to push beyond software into the physical world.
